let's play a game!

I'm going to tell you a story. Listen [read] closely and don't miss a single detail. Then tell me what you think it means. When I read allegory, I always wonder if I get what I'm supposed to, but usually the author is dead. This is an exercise in reading allegory. You have to figure out what the story means. Tell me what you think, and I'll tell you if you got it right.

Sunday Afternoons

The destiny, minister general,
That executeth in the world everywhere
The providence that God hath foreseen,
So strong it is that, though the world had sworn
The contrary of a thing by yea or nay,
Yet sometime it shall fall on a day
That falls not often within a thousand years.
For certainly, our desires here,
Be it of war, or peace, or hate, or love,
All is this ruled by the sight above.
-The Knight's Tale, 1663-72 (translation mine)

For all of our manipulation of circumstances, our chasing after the wind, our best intentions and worst attempts, what power have we on this earth and to what end? That crazy Jewish man talked about this once from a hillside. He said we shouldn't worry about those things beyond our control, but instead we must pour our passions elsewhere. All the obsession of our minds, the longing of our hearts, will be fruitless unless poured into that which is above all and works all and fulfills all. For this reason let us seek not war, or peace, or hate, or love, but the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, for the power of war and peace and hate and love are contained therein. Blessed is the one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness, for he shall be satisfied. Blessed is the one who seeks first the Kingdom, for the King is a rewarder of those who seek Him. Blessed is the one who looks upon himself and confesses, "Behold, I know nothing." Blessed is the one who trusts and pursues and finds existence in the Almighty.
