In a cultural language class last semester, we learned about the difference between doing and being. In some cultures, value is placed on being, while in others (ours) the emphasis is on doing. You can find this everywhere, from that question we all loathe (What will you do after you graduate?) to the wonderful microwave oven that takes my chicken pot pie from frozen to steaming in 7 minutes. Doing is not always bad, and doing efficiently can be great, but not if it comes at the cost of simply being.
